To Hawaiian this is Puuloa, home of a goddess supposed to keep island waters free of marauding sharks. Its modern name was adopted in the early 19th century when pearl oyster were obtained here for King Kamehameha I. Pearl Harbor is the largest natural harbor in the Pacific.
On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked the harbor, plunging US Navy base and headquarters for US Pacific Fleet. This is an on-the spot memorial to the 1102 men lost aboard the U.S.S. Arizona. Their name are inscribed within a structure built over hulk.
