The Monro Trail
by ALOHA DEAN
James Munro was a ranch manager on Lanai at the turn of the century (the 20th). In order to create a watershed area on Lanai he planted the ridge with trees. The Cook Island pines help to draw water from the passing clouds. The pines also lend a distinctive note to this part of the island. The misty rolling hills of Lanai are very different from other parts of the island. During this hike you'll also see ironwood and eucalyptus trees (take a deep breath and you'll smell the eucalyptus too). After hour and a half on bumpy, unpaved trail with 4WD, I learn why most people there drive jeep and second why rental company charge $137 a day.
