Kalalau Trail

The trail begins with a steep half-mile climb that offers several vista points where you can catch your breath and enjoy the view back down to Ke’e beach. There’s plenty of tropical foliage, and before long the blue Pacific spreads out before your eyes.
A short distance further and you’ll be enjoying the famous Na Pali coast view along the coast, with waves crashing against towering cliffs, will be one of the most breathtaking sites you’ll ever see. Many people consider this one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The climb continues until about the one mile marker, but the views take your mind off the exertion. About 20 minutes before you reach Hanakapi'ai Beach, you’ll cross a (usually) small stream. Water levels vary depending on weather conditions. If you’re tired, this is a nice place to rest for a few minutes and cool your toes in the water.
There are no life guards, and swimming is strongly discouraged. As you get closer to the beach, you’ll descend along the side of the Hanakapi'ai River valley. The valley floor is strewn with rocks and boulders.
Look one direction and you see a prehistoric gorge straight out of Jurassic Park. Turn around and you’re looking at a gleaming white sand beach with beautiful blue water beyond.
In winter, the beach can wash away completely. In summer, the waves build it up again, but at high tide or with high surf, it may not be accessible. If you plan to hike beyond Hanakapi'ai Beach, or if you plan to camp there, you’ll need permits.
