The Endangered Buddhist Temples of Hawai'i
(Big Island): How Can I Help?
by
ALOHA DEAN
Inspired by these two articles , one
by Rod Ohira with Title "Hawai'i temples, often unnoticed, slowly
decay" and second by
Catherine E. Toth "Temples in the 'aina" at Honolulu Advertiser
and my O'ahu submission,
I decided to continue the story with Big Island endangered Hawaii Buddhist
Temples.
The following Oahu story with Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and great historical background of over 110 years in Hawaii. The first Hongwanji temple in Hawaii was dedicated on March 3, 1889. Since then, 36 temples and the Buddhist Study Center have been established statewide, including the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin and the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.
One of my best experiences was visiting statewide temples was
at Wood Valley Temple - Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling. Nechung Dorje Drayang
Ling "Immutable Island of Melodious Sound" is a Buddhist temple and
retreat located on 25 acres in Wood Valley, the Ka'u District of the
Island of Hawai'i. His Holy ness the Dalai Lama has visited and
taught here twice. Many other well known Tibetan lamas of all
lineages are invited yearly to teach programs open to the public.
Established in 1973 by the Venerable Nechung Rinpoche, Nechung Dorje
Drayang Ling is a center for the dissemination of the Buddhist teachings,
a place for great masters to teach and for students to receive and actualize
these instructions through contemplation and meditation.
Following story here you have random list some of the of photographed Buddhist Temple from Big island Hawai'i.
